Most dryers direct hot air outside through ductwork and a vent. Ventless (condensing) dryers cool the air and release it back into your home.
Dryers use anywhere from 1,800-5,000 watts of electricity per hour. Lint is highly flammable, so fire is a big concern. For both safety and efficiency, clean the lint from your ducts and vents twice a year.

Step 1: Start the dryer. If you have a gas dryer, you may need to find the gas valve and turn it on. It’s usually behind the machine. Check the gas lines every six months for leaks.
Step 2: If the machine tips or rocks while running, adjust the feet at each corner so it’s stable. Before the cycle ends, find the vent on the outside of your home. Make sure air is flowing out continuously. The air should be warm and dry. If the ductwork or vent is visibly clogged, or air isn’t flowing, clean them immediately.
Step 3: Even if air is flowing, cleaning is important. Detach the ductwork from the rear of your dryer and clear the lint with a brush, air compressor, or vacuum. You can also buy a specialized kit from a hardware store or hire a professional.
Step 4: Be sure to clean the lint filter inside the machine after every use. Clean the ductwork and vent twice a year.
