Membrane Roofs

Used on flat roofs, membrane roofing is sealed using a chemical bond or heat. To prevent water from collecting, most of these roofs have drains and a slight slope.

The membrane is typically the thickness of a dime. Damaged seams and tears around vents, drains, or other structures are common problem points. Drains sometimes clog.

Steps to Assessing Your Membrane Roof

 

Step 1: Examine the roof surface for debris. If you decide to remove debris, walk carefully so you don’t puncture the membrane.

 

Step 2: Check the seams to make sure they’re tightly bonded. Examine the membrane around walls (parapets), drains, vents, and corners for tears or punctures. Any openings should be repaired immediately.

 

Step 3: Check the roof’s drains. They may be located around the edge or in the center. You may have to remove debris from grates or screens to allow water to drain.

 

Step 4: If you clear the drains and still find standing water, you may have a problem with your roof’s structure. Contact a roofing professional for a more in-depth inspection.
