Step 1: Check for missing, cracked, or split shingles or shakes. Damage can be hard to spot. Discoloration can be a clue. The wood inside cracks is often a different color than the surface. Gaps in roofing leave your home vulnerable to damage. Repair them ASAP.
Step 2: A little bending or curling at the edges of shingles or shakes is normal. If any are way out of line, or so warped you can see the roof’s underlayment, you may have a problem with venting or moisture. Get an expert opinion.
Step 3: If you notice any spots that remain damp longer than other areas, you may have a problem with the roof’s underlayment or sheathing. Contact a professional for a more in-depth inspection.
Step 4: Inspect the flashing. You’ll see it where the roof meets things like chimneys, vents, and skylights. Look for corrosion, holes, cracks, missing sealant, and gaps. If you see any of these issues, address them immediately.
Step 5: Remove anything growing on the roof. Moss, lichen, mold, and vines can damage it.
