15-25 Minute Assessment

HVAC: Furnace

Oil furnaces have burners that filter and ignite the oil. Gas furnaces have a pilot light or an electric starter. The fumes exit through vent pipes.

Many furnaces use blower motors to help move air. To save energy, you can use the dampers in your ductwork to block airflow to less-used rooms.

Get a professional inspection every year, before the heating season starts. In between, change your air filters regularly.

Steps to Assess Your Furnace

Step 1: To prevent fires and ensure easy access, clean the outside of your furnace and the area around it. Check the outside for dents, cracks, and corrosion. Repair damage ASAP.

Step 2: Check the air filter. It’s usually behind an access panel. If it’s dirty, replace it.

Step 3: Check the air filter. It’s usually behind an access panel. If it’s dirty, replace it.

Step 4: Start your furnace. If it won’t start, check for a service switch or a tripped breaker. Does it make sounds without heating up? You may need to relight the pilot light or order fuel.

Step 5: After 15 minutes, the ductwork should be warm. If it’s too hot to touch, there’s an airflow problem. Check your vents and ductwork for closed dampers.
