Well folks, this was a tough year. The pandemic had a major impact on all our lives and communities. But as we make our way through the holiday season, you may feel the familiar desire to give back, especially with so many people and organizations in need of extra support.
So, what does community service look like during a pandemic? Fortunately, there are still many ways to help while keeping yourself and your household safe.
Here are seven tips to give back this holiday season:
1. Write a “Thank You” note to essential workers
Grocery store employees, garbage haulers, mail carriers, police officers and many other essential workers have kept our communities running during the pandemic. Often, their courage and hard work is in the background. Consider what essential workers in your community deserve some recognition and send them a “Thank You” card.
2. Reach out to someone who may feel alone
Quarantine can be lonely. On top of the isolation, many folks are dealing with challenges like the loss of a job or a loved one. Think about the people you know who may be struggling. Reach out with a text, phone call, Zoom chat, or any other socially distant method. Let them know you’re thinking about them and ask if there’s anything you can do to lighten their load.
3. Give to a charity in your community
Showing support in person may not be an option this year, but you may be able to give electronically. Most organizations have an option to donate through their websites, and nonprofits that give toys to kids in need often have “wish lists.” They let you order and send items without leaving your home.
4. Support a social enterprise
Social enterprises are businesses that use their profits to fund programs that solve social issues. Organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Goodwill are social enterprises. They often depend on donations from the community to support their causes. Check with the organization about their donation protocols. Some may offer curbside pickup, though they may not take certain items due to COVID-19.
5. Donate your skills to a nonprofit
Know how to code? Love to write? Have another expertise you can share? Nonprofits are often in need of volunteers. Thanks to technology, many skills are possible to share remotely. Reach out to some local nonprofits and let them know what your skills are and how you can lend a hand.
6. Give blood
Donating blood is free to do and it could save someone’s life. In the midst of the pandemic, blood banks are struggling to cope with the challenges at hand, including a decrease in donations. Call your local blood bank to learn about the way the process has changed in light of COVID-19. The Red Cross is a great resource for more information.
7. Raise awareness on social media
A fundraiser on social media (or even a simple shout out post) can be a great way to use your platform to support an organization you admire. If you have a personal connection, tell a story about how it’s supported you or someone you know.
Becoming part of a community is one of the joys of homeownership, and each one has its needs. Since COVID-19 has put an extra strain on so many, the 2020 holiday season is the perfect time give back. Keep a social distance, wear a mask, and stay safe!
