Steps to Assessing Your Asphalt Shingled Roof
Step 1: Look for missing, loose, or cracked shingles. Damaged shingles can allow water into your home and should be repaired immediately.
Step 2: Blistered or rippled shingles may indicate a deeper problem, such as improper attic ventilation, damaged underlayment, or installation issues.
Step 3: Inspect the flashing. You’ll see it where the roof meets things like chimneys, vents, and skylights. Look for corrosion, holes, cracks, missing sealant, and gaps. These issues should be addressed immediately.
Step 4: If your shingles look brittle or curled at the edges, or if they’re missing the surface layer of grit, your roof cover may be at the end of its life. Contact a roofing professional right away.
Step 5: Remove anything growing on your roof. Moss, lichen, mold, and vines can damage it.
